Technical Brief with Dr. Barry Ruck May 24, 2012

Q: Can we make a PAK-IT for leather?

A: Yes, it can be done. With leather products, you do not want a high level of detergent because it dries out the leather. There are three products for leather:

Cleaner: saddle soap base
Conditioner: to add oil, shine into the leather
Polish: to make it water resistant

Q: In the cleaning industry, is it common to have the same formulation with different names and applications?

A: Yes, it is common to do so when the surfaces are similar.  For example, carpet and clothing have similar soils and stains so their formulas might share common cleaning agents.. However, you would never use a window cleaner on clothing.

Q: Can you please describe the difference between enzymes and detergents?

A: An enzyme product is an organic catalyst. They take natural, ordinary processes and make them work faster. The difference between a detergent and an enzyme is that a detergent removes soluble stains quickly. An enzyme breaks down starches (food), grease, and protein soils (blood) at a slow rate.

Enzymes can get down into carpet and porous surfaces; they are similar to the game PAK-MAN in that they eat away at soils.

Ecolab currently has an enzyme product for floors, kitchens and grout. It works deep down into the grout and eats the soils, but again, at a slow rate.

Enzymes work well for range hoods, septic tanks, grease traps, and pet stains. They should not be mixed with disinfectants and bleach as they will kill the enzymes.

Q: There is a PAK-IT product that states on the bottle or label "not for reuse." Can you please explain why?

A: It must be the neutral disinfectant, as wording must be approved by the EPA. That rule is in effect because most cleaning companies do not use technologies such as ours which permit refills.  It's actually the solution that expires due to the decreased effectiveness of the chemicals over time. The bottles are easily reusable, the plastic containers do not "expire."   Our clients can reuse their disinfectant bottles by putting noting the date that the formulation was first mixed and disposing of unused solution by the expiration date.
